So, you just got your ride a ceramic coating applied at Steel City Auto Spa. That was a smart move. Your car looks incredible, and you’re ready to show it off around Pittsburgh. But hold on a second.
The first few weeks after application are critical. What you do during this time can make or break your coating’s performance. Too many car owners accidentally mess up their fresh ceramic coating by doing things they shouldn’t.
Let’s discuss what to avoid so your coating lasts as long as it should.
Don't Touch Your Car For At Least A Week
This is the big one. Your ceramic coating needs time to cure properly. Most coatings take about 7 days to bond fully with your paint, during which time the coating is vulnerable.
Keep your hands off the paint. That means:

No washing

No wiping down

No touching to check if it's smooth

No removing dust or debris
We know it’s tempting. Your car looks amazing, and you want to keep it that way. But even a light touch can disrupt the curing process. The oils from your skin can interfere with how the coating bonds to your paint.
If a bird decides to leave a present on your hood during this week, let it sit. Yes, really. One week of bird droppings won’t permanently damage your paint, especially with the protective coating. But trying to remove it too soon can damage the layer itself.
Stay Away From Automatic Car Washes
Automatic car washes are never great for your paint. But they’re especially bad right after the ceramic coating application. Those spinning brushes and harsh chemicals can scratch your fresh coating before it’s fully cured.
Even after the coating cures, we recommend avoiding automatic washes. The whole point of ceramic coating is protecting your paint and keeping it flawless. Automatic car washes work against that goal.
Stick to hand washing. Better yet, bring your car back to us for maintenance washes. We know how to care for ceramic-coated vehicles because we apply them daily in our Pittsburgh shop.
Don't Park Under Trees Or Near Construction
Your coating needs a stable environment during the curing period. Tree sap, falling acorns, and pollen can all land on your fresh coating and cause problems. Sap is particularly nasty because it’s sticky and acidic.
Construction sites are another hazard. Dust, debris, and metal particles can settle on your coating while it’s still curing, and they can become partially embedded in the coating as it hardens.
For the first week or two, park in a garage if you have one. If not, find a covered parking spot away from trees and construction zones. Your coating will thank you.
Skip The Wax And Sealants
Some people think adding wax to a ceramic coating gives it extra protection. It doesn’t. Actually, it does the opposite.
Ceramic coating already provides a protective layer over your paint. Adding wax creates a barrier between the coating and the environment. This prevents the coating from doing its job properly. Plus, wax can build up on the coating, making it look hazy.
Your ceramic coating doesn’t need additional products for at least 6 months. After that, you might use a ceramic boost spray, but never traditional wax. We can recommend the right products when the time comes.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals And Cleaners
Not all car care products play nice with ceramic coating. Harsh chemicals can strip away the coating or reduce its hydrophobic properties. This includes:

Abrasive compounds

Strong degreasers

Petroleum-based cleaners

Alkaline wheel cleaners on painted surfaces
When you do start rewashing your car, use pH-neutral car shampoo. These cleaners are gentle enough for ceramic coating but still effective at removing dirt. Stay away from dish soap too. It’s designed to strip away protective coatings, which is the last thing you want.
Many Pittsburgh winters mean road salt. Be careful with salt removers. Some are too aggressive for ceramic coatings. Ask us about safe winter maintenance products before the snow hits.
Don't Expect It To Be Indestructible
Ceramic coating is an amazing technology. It makes your car easier to clean, protects against UV damage, and gives your paint a deep gloss. But it’s not a force field.
You still need to wash your car regularly. Dirt and contaminants won’t bond to the coating like to bare paint, but they’ll still accumulate. If you let brake dust sit on your wheels for months, it’ll eventually cause problems.
The coating also won’t prevent rock chips or key scratches. It adds hardness to your paint but can’t stop physical impacts. Think of it as sunscreen for your car. It protects against certain types of damage, but not everything.
Understanding these limitations helps you maintain realistic expectations and properly care for your vehicle.
Keep It Out Of Rain For 24-48 Hours
Water is the enemy of ceramic coatings during the initial curing phase. Most coatings need at least 24 hours without water exposure, but some require 48 hours, depending on humidity and temperature.
Check the weather forecast before scheduling your ceramic coating appointment. If rain is coming, we suggest rescheduling. Pittsburgh weather can be unpredictable, so this matters.
If your car does get caught in unexpected rain during the curing period, don’t panic. Light mist usually won’t cause major issues. However, a heavy downpour can wash away parts of the uncured coating or create water spots that get locked into the finish.
For those first two days, park in a covered area whenever possible. Your garage, a parking deck, or even a carport will work.
